David Fanning
President and CEO, Theraclone Sciences- David Fanning has over 20 years of combined experience in pharmaceuticals and corporate management. Prior to Theraclone, he served as Chief Operating Officer of Seattle-based Corixa Corporation from 2001 to 2005. During that time, Mr. Fanning was responsible for business development, manufacturing, commercial operations, and program management. Corixa was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline in July of 2005. From 2000 to 2001, Mr. Fanning was Chief Business Officer for CoPharma, Inc. of Hopkinton, MA. And, from 1997 to 2000, served as Vice President, Business Development and Marketing for Corixa. From 1995 to 1997, Mr. Fanning worked in business development at CytoTherapeutics, Inc. (currently, Stem Cells, Inc.) and led the formation of Modex Therapeutiques, SA in Lausanne. From 1988 to 1995, Mr. Fanning was a consultant in the Tokyo and Cambridge offices of The MAC Group/ Gemini Consulting (currently, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young). Mr. Fanning received his AB from Harvard University and his SM in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Steven Gillis, Ph.D.
Executive Chairman, Theraclone Sciences; Managing Director, ARCH Venture Partners- Steven Gillis, Ph.D. is a Managing Director at ARCH Venture Partners, focused on the evaluation of new life science technologies and also on the development and growth of ARCH’s biotechnology portfolio companies. Dr. Gillis was a founder and director of Corixa Corp. and served as the company’s Chief Executive Officer since inception and as its Chairman since January of 1999. Corixa was acquired by GlaxoSmithKline in July of 2005. Prior to starting Corixa, Dr. Gillis was a founder and director of Immunex Corp. From 1981 until his departure in 1994, Dr. Gillis served as Immunex’s Director of Research and Development, Chief Scientific Officer, and Chief Executive Officer of Immunex’s Research and Development subsidiary. Dr. Gillis was interim Chief Executive Officer of Immunex Corp. following its majority purchase by American Cyanamid Co. and he remained a member of the Board of Directors until 1997. Immunex was acquired by Amgen Inc. in 2002. Dr. Gillis is an immunologist by training and is credited as being a pioneer in the field of cytokines and cytokine receptors, directing the development of multiple marketed products, including Leukine®, Prokine®, Enbrel®, and Bexxar®. Dr. Gillis received his B.A. from Williams College in 1975 and his Ph.D. from Dartmouth College in 1978.
Matthew Moyle, Ph.D.
Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer, Theraclone Sciences- Dr. Moyle joined Theraclone as Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer in May, 2007. He has more than twenty years of industry experience in drug discovery and development of biologics and small molecules. Prior to joining Theraclone, Dr. Moyle was Vice President of Research and Corporate Officer at Tanox, a Houston-based public biotech company specializing in monoclonal antibody therapeutics, where he built a successful product pipeline including three antibody candidates that have advanced to development thus far. Before Tanox, Dr. Moyle headed the Expression Profiling & Pharmacogenomics department at Amgen, which included responsibility for building and running the company’s high-throughput microarray facility. Before that, he was a Group Leader at Corvas (now Dendreon), where he co-discovered two novel natural product biologics that were partnered with Pharma and subsequently advanced to pivotal clinical trials. Dr. Moyle was a postdoctoral scientist at Genentech where he was part of the company’s first program in small molecule therapeutics. He earned a Ph.D. and B.Sc. in Biochemistry at the University of Toronto, and has more than 40 publications and issued US patents.
Kristen M. Hege, M.D.
Acting Chief Medical Officer, Theraclone Sciences- Dr. Hege joined Theraclone as Acting Chief Medical Officer in March 2009. She has fifteen years of industry experience in clinical development of immunotherapies and gene therapies for cancer and infectious diseases. Prior to joining Theraclone as a clinical consultant, Dr. Hege was Vice President of Clinical Research and Development and a member of the executive team at Cell Genesys, a San Francisco Bay Area biotechnology company. During her fourteen years at Cell Genesys she focused on immune and gene therapies for HIV infection as well as multiple solid tumors and hematologic cancers. Platform therapies included genetically retargeted T cells, cytokine gene-modified tumor cell vaccines, and selectively replicating oncolytic viruses which she shepherded through all stages of clinical trials. In addition to her biotechnology experience, Dr. Hege has held a faculty appointment at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) since 1996 and is currently an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine. Dr. Hege is trained in Internal Medicine and holds active subspecialty board certification in both Hematology and Medical Oncology. She received her M.D. from UCSF and subspecialty training at the Harvard-affiliated Brigham & Women's Hospital and UCSF. Academic honors include graduation from Dartmouth University summa cum laude and election to the Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Societies.
Russ Hawkinson
Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Theraclone Sciences- Russ Hawkinson joins Theraclone from Cell Therapeutics, where he was Vice President, Finance and Accounting from 2006 to 2007. From 1995 to 2005, Mr. Hawkinson was Vice President, Finance at Corixa Corporation, where he directed the finance and accounting functions, including all aspects of planning and reporting, operational accounting, and oversight of all SEC-related activities. Prior to Corixa, Mr. Hawkinson was an audit senior manager at Ernst & Young. Mr. Hawkinson received his B.A. from the University of Washington.
